I have had both, and adore both. I like the aloofness and affection of cats, as well as their ability to take care of themselves. Both my cats died last year and I still haven't gotten over it. My dog is a total sweetheart though, and I feel like raising her was an extremely valuable experience. She's getting pretty old now too, but still as great as ever.
Dogs are way grosser than cats though, and require about eight thousand times more attention. Deep down I might be more of a cat person (mostly due to time considerations), but I have loved both equally.
