Pookie, you are not the first to make the comparison.
I have had total strangers walk up to me in public and give me crap by saying "Are you in Duran Duran or something?"
Heartthrob or no, the cheesiness factor is what gets me.
I definitely see the humor in it though, and I do think it's funny.
I always preferred Japan to Duran Duran back then, but they all wore funny clothes too.
I think I was going for a Spacemen 3/JAMC kind of vibe at the time that pic was taken, but apparently I didn't pull it off.
