I didn't say they weren't gimmicky. They are.
All I meant was that for me to write off a schtick band as a MERE schtick band, the schtick has to be the main thrust of their existence, with the music playing second fiddle to an attention-getting presentation style.
The Residents and Devo both had too much of a fully fleshed-out aesthetic going on to be written off as mere schtick bands in my mind. That's all I meant.
Man...or ASTROman? were a gimmick band, but a great one.
