Imagine if everybody who wrote LOL really did laugh out loud when they wrote that. They'd look nuts. Typing away, then OH, HA, HA, HA, HA.
LOL should be changed to something like CMTM (chuckling mildly to myself) or TOASOMF (trace of a smile on my face) or SATIMNBEBMFE (somewhat amused though it may not be evident by my facial expression).
