A review (stolen again!) from The Times

MOGWAI
Zidane: A 21st-century Portrait

PIAS X067CD
Faced with the instrumental post-rock of bands such as Mogwai, reviewers have often fallen back on the old “sounds like the soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t been made” line. Not this time, though, because Zidane is the soundtrack to a movie that has been made — the documentary by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno that focused unremittingly on French football genius Zinedine Zidane throughout the entire 92 minutes of a Real Madrid match against Villarreal. Mogwai hold off on the aural fireworks, instead conjuring an air of brooding tension that — presciently enough — hints at exactly the kind of hidden darkness that erupted in the World Cup final. Tracks such as 7.25 and Half Time are mouthwateringly beautiful. Can’t wait for the sequel: Music to Butt Italians By.
