belomancy: belomancy or 'The Preston Prophecy' was a short-lived form of divination practiced in some industrial towns of northern England in the late 19th century. A scoop of ashes from a furnace were spread across the factory floor by a pair of bellows, and the fortune of the bellower (or 'beloer') were read. The practice was outlawed by the Factory Act of 1892, which denounced the art as 'the magikal tomfoolery of satan' and allowed a sentence of death by hanging.
