If anything was ruined for him, he oughta just look into growing some thicker skin. You're going to get both positive and negative feedback in whatever pursuits you may choose to take up in life. Anybody'll tell you that how you grow and progress usually relies on how you choose to (or not to) respond to such feedback. Take the good with a grain of salt and the bad with a cool & level head. Even the most ignorant, hateful pricks make some good points from time to time.
My advice to Matt? Get a hair cut, do some acid, and stop listening to other people's music for about a year. Stop reading, too... and watching TV. Just lock yrself in a dark room until you come up with something halfway original.
Most important part is that acid. Turn yr. ego into a squirming, volatile amoeba, ready to lash out and consume all that gets in it's way... "stop making sense," as they say.
