I'd have to agree that this would be a good time for earplugs. although *I* might be laughing to myself at your expense, you aren't sending a non-verbal signal that says "I can't take the way this sounds" to everyone around you.
while I find earplugs to be for sissies, I think that putting fingers in your ears is just plain rude.
then again, until the suede-denim-secret-police start enforcing these "rules", you'll be safe from any serious prison time.
