the nano is a flash player like any other, no? perhaps a bit pricier? i have an old flash iriver i use on rare occasions. bought it mostly to do sound recording of interviews. you can get an iriver or sandisk for less than the nano, don't you? (i haven't chekkt).
about ipod/itunes: if you wanna play anything on it you must h4x0r, and not everyone is up to that, and besides that would void your warranty, no?
