i know what you mean Trasher, i think all bands have to influenced by another or more than one band, like when the interviewer askes "who are your influences?" and your band sounds similar to Interpol/Strokes/YYY or whatever your not gonna lie and say "awwwww S Club 7" i think in someway these bands dont really start out trying to sound like their influences, i think if thats the music thats inside you and thats the music that gets yr blood pumping and gets the hairs on the back of yr neck standing well i think its just a natural progression that these bands that influenced you will play a part in the sounding of any original music you write, i, for example love simple music, love writing it and listening to it, what i mean by this is basic and simple music, verse/chorus/verse/bridge /simple solo/double chorus end... its why i love Nirvana so much, like i mean - when i was a nipper i loved Guns and Roses and i wanted to play like Slash but basically i had'nt a fuckin snowflakes chance in hell of doing it.. till Nirvana came along like a very tall man and handed me the book i was trying to reach from the top shelf and said "here go do it yourself" i remember the night i learned to play "polly" i could'nt believe it - now i didnt want to be Slash anymore, i wanted to be me and from that i got such a kick outa writing simple melodic songs.
a band can sound like everything you every wanted them to sound like without criticism but there is one fact that balances this like the Ying/Yang of the whole world and thats the fact that there will always be a critic.
Interpol's first album, Turn on the Bright Lights, i remember the day and the shop i bought that CD. (they day before xmas eve/tower records dublin) its just one of those CD's that make your whold life worthwhile.
