I think the condemned person is given an anaesthetic to put them in a deep sleep, then a second drug is used to paralyse the old muscles and then a third, potassium chloride I believe, stops the heart. Apparently there has been many cases which they have discovered after the execution in autopsies that the criminal hasn't been given enough anaesthetic and have felt the pain.
