I don't know if our use of the word is true to the original Spanish meaning, but it is a very useful word. Most restaurants serve a meal in which you have an appetizer, entree and dessert. With tapas, most of the dishes are offered in small portions, allowing you to try many dishes. This significantly changes the experience.
