for me, zonealarm has been screwed up for about year. like you said, it would just randomly lock out the net completely. it drove me nuts for about a week before I uninstalled it (another completely frustrating experience). I spent hours trying to figure out what I had done to make it stop working and came to no real conclusion.

lately, I've only been using the XP wall and it's worked just as well as ZA ever did. it's hard to tell if I've just been lucky, or more careful of what I've been looking at, but I haven't had to scrub My Computer of malware in a long time.

this is all subject to change once I go home and google "russian pr0n".

PS: you didn't get a new router or reset a current one did you? most routers have hardware firewalls and if it reset somehow you could be getting port conflicts with your software firewall. this wasn't the case for me, but it's a possibility so I thought I'd throw it out.
