you people have to stop thinking of guitar "solos" as some sort of separate added on thing. that is only the case with shitty fuckers. a solo of any type is just a part in a song where ONE instrument carries the melody for a while instead of the voice or the whole group.
the guitar supplanted the piano which supplanted the saxophone in rock n roll. The sax was first and rock songs always had a stomping sax solo, then the piano became the forefront member, and piano solos would make you dance and jumop and shout and freak. Once the guitar became the entrenched instrument de rigeur for rock n roll the guitar solo was the main event.
punk music began to get rid of the guitar solo, not because guitar solos suck per se, but because they had come to symbolize everything that was bloated and decadent andstupid in big time arena/AOR rock of the time. hardcore punk took it even further. The problem was that punk, and hardcore in particular are such constricting musical idioms that they quickly became boring. people like j mascis and Doug marscht who LOVED the guitar and who could play the fuck out of the guitar told the goddamn punk and college rock stalwarts to shove it up their asses because they were going to play solos and they were going to do it in a way that made everyone shut the fuck up about it.
the second half of MOTE is essentially a guitar "solo"
most of sonic youth's skironk breaks are guitar "solos"
