Yes, I think the buzz term for the fallacy is argumentum ad nazium.
I believe it happens when people are too lazy or ignorant to argue their points and just appeal to the emotions with some innane comparison. Nazis are the easiest but Soviet Russia, 1984, the slave-owning plantation owner are also examples. It is crowd-following logic.
