He's not going to suffer from it... as most of the time he gets more publicity for every new haircut or interview where he reveals to wear posh' undies than he gets for whatever it is he does on the pitch (unless it's missing a penalty or receiving a red card in a major tournament perhaps).
Besides, it's definitely not the level of competetion in soccer that got him to the US in the first place... now that $250 million contract for 5 years however, hmmm.
Also, I agree with Rob Instigator and don't think it's going to make the sport any more popular in the US. It didn't work in 70s either when they brought Pele, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, George Best, etc to the US.
Just like Beckham they were aging stars, but each of them much bigger names than Beckham.
