You knw I did read an article about the vanishing payphone, didn't believe it until I left NYC and was in Portland Maine recently and had to walk all over to find one.
If you remember in the 80's they took out many of the fire alarm boxes because there were enough payphones, now they're taking out the payphones because they assume everyone has a cell. It is all really short sighted, in 5 years I predict ATT and Verizon will petition the FCC to shut down their local service and remove the copper for scrap. Supposedly they are selling off their rural business because there is not enough money in land line service. And then there will be a solar burst that will fry all the satellites one day and we'll be screwed (or blessed depending on how you look at it). Maybe there is opportunity in this older technology for community based groups to step up, just like some have done with AM radio.
