One's conversational voice isn't necessarily the same as one's writing voice--even though one tries to write conversationally. I know excellent writers who can barely put two words together over a cup of coffee, but who write circles around me.

What I've found helps to get over my shyness around people is to pretend I'm somebody else. Sometimes I put on Larry David, other times David Duchovny, depending on how old and bald I'm feeling.
