Sorry, that 'pass it' part was very badly worded. I have corrected it and now the metaphor makes more sense. Just try doing things that makes yourself look better than him. I guess it is somewhat conceded to do so, but if they're not having the best relationship, it would be a good time to do that.
By conclusions I mean don't assume that she likes you and wants to dump her boyfriend just because she says 'nice shoes' or 'you have a complex, intelligent approach at _____________'. Always be sure about whatever move you make, because relationships are so easy to fuck up.
