That sucks. I had the best cat in the world who we got from the humane society, and he was an outdoor and he (at least this is what the vet believed) licked some pesticide (!!!!) so we had to put him down. It was the day before/of 9/11, too.
I have two cats and a dog and one of the cats sleeps with me a lot and I can't imagine losing him. I'm with Emily in that I get more sad when pets die than when people die.
