This incident reminds me of a guy I knew back in Athens. His father was one of the top real estate agents in Vermont, and thus, he had a large disposable income.
I remember one phone call for money to his dad he made. He haggled with his father for a few minutes on the phone for "a few dollars." His dad sent him a check for 17,000. And this amount disappointed my friend haha.
He was constantly getting into trouble. I could go on for a long time and feel I sort of should because many of the stories are pretty funny, but I won't. He was also always wrecking his car at the time and having his belongings either destroyed or stolen.
This one time, myself and a couple of guys were at his place when he was out. They both decided to steal all a bunch of his cds and split the moment he left the house. I asked them not to do so and they knew they would be found out, but they did it anyway. I was just about the only person he ever knew that he found he could trust.
Anyway, the guy was extremely gregarious and just tried too hard to make everyone like him. He would have large parties whenever he could, and even hire bands. He fancied himself a band manager to a few bands that, in the end, did not really consider him their manager. His personality was obnoxious to most, and people seemed to tend to pretend to be his friend until they had the best oppportunity to stab him in the back. He went to small claims court several times and won his cases, but, as far as I know, he never was successful at securing any actual financial compensation from the people who would take advantage of him.
