PiL were a marginally innovative and influential band, but they aren't legends like the Sex Pistols.
That should be basic to the non-obtuse.
Furthermore, Lydon has always had a very unconventional voice and style, but that didn't matter with his work with the Sex Pistols, because his heart is clearly there and it translates into the power and energy of that legendary music. His vocals and lyrics sound terrific on Never Mind the Bullocks...Here's the Sex Pistols.
But as soon as Lydon left and formed PiL, his listenability declined rapidly. He's pretty bad now, and also was fairly wretched on the previous reunions. The guy admittedly doesn't like to perform anyway, and he's very "off" for the most part in my opinion, but again, he's been "off" ever since during most of PiL. Although, some of PiL is strong enough musically to get past Lydon's shortcomings.
I would have much rather have heard "Liar" or "Problems" tonight.
