I used to always listen to music when I ran, because it helped get me into a good running rhythm - The right music worked like a metronome for my feet. So I can see why the NYC marathon people might say that listening to an ipod could be considered an artificial aid, but at the end of the day it's still the runners' muscles providing the power, and they're not being aided. The logical next step to banning ipod would be to ban sports psychology.
