as in a hifi system?
you probably need a good amp and good speakers.
marantz do decent amplifiers and they are not too expensive.
for speakers - if you look around in hifi stores, and look at the ads, you might find some second hand bargains. i picked up a pair of gorgeous 12" by 20" 1977 tannoy speakers for £80 ($160). it seems that lots of silly people sell off their old hifi systems to make way for the digital revolution. you can get some amazing bargains.
 



i play my marantz amplifier (PM4400 - should be about $200 new) through these and they sound just divine.
