Since I'm old I kind of look at an email as a letter or phone call in voicemail - there may be a reason an immediate reply is necessary - you are collaborating on a project - but the usual email isn't really that important, right? I was out sick last week and some people wrote to me "Ah you're ignoring me" but no, I'm just ill.

I just don't think I need to drop everything and get back to you just to get back to you - no more than i feel obligated to return your chatty phone call. I have a life, and probably don't want to waste it on the phone. But I'm in the minority on that I'm sure. Seems most people waste their entire lives on their cells. So well named.

"To do otherwise in this day and age is sort of like giving somebody a blank look when you're having a face-to-face conversation and you don't say something"
This is normal behavior. these days- or one just changes the topic.
