I think it depends on the institution and class - at my huge freshman classes the prof had no idea who was there, but at my seminar classes you wouldn't get away with that.
Plus a lot of colleges (at least around NYC) have so much security now you can't even go in and visit old professors, never mind invade a class - at least at Lang it was that way. assholes give alumni nothing. Then they have the gall to send me letters looking for donations.
