My record collection takes up a lot of space, but I don't really have the disposable income to get to the point of "imprisonment" for decades. I thin it out occasionally also. Furniture is a tough one and I have to watch it; I am at the point now where I have to get rid of something in order to bring something else in. This can keep me in check and help with deciding what I "need" to have and what I need to simply "appreciate" and move on.

I have one friend whose life as a professional collector/antique dealer/packrat could easily be made into a movie, and his house (which is HUGE) is completely full of all manner of crazy things of old. Some would view his life as an imprisonment of sorts, but knowing him, I cannot imagine him living any other way. His house is a constant source of fascination for me, and I love staying with him when I am in Boston. However, it also served as the cautionary example for me, and was very helpful in my decision to focus my collecting on a couple of key interests.
There is too much "cool old crap" out there to have all of it. Some of it you need to just marvel at and go on your way.
