In terms of a good drum program, you can always just use Fruity Loops and plug in wav samples of drum sounds from a really nice Roland drum machine....these samples are pretty easy to find. It might be kind of tedious to do using the piano roll function, but it's pretty fun and you'll get the hang of it. At worst, you could always mess around with Hammerhead which is really fun too.
