i have to say though that for all of putin's totalitarian crapola, russia is at least in better shape than in the 90s when crazy capitalism without a judicial framework put her in the hands of oligarchs and the mafia. it was a joke of a country and they couldn't even pay the people who guarded the nuclear silos. yes a lot of their new found fortune has to do with the price of oil, but i think also with the restoration of social order. and while i do not endorse their horribly authoritarian social order, i think in some way it's better than a society where organized crime trumps the govenment. hopefully they can liberalize their society in a gradual and more rational manner in years to come.
