His Holiness' visit is the first visit of the Egyptian Patriarch to Ethiopia in over thirty years, though Abuna Paulos has made several trips to Egypt. It is a precedent setting event, as the Ethiopian Church has been subject to Alexandria for 1600 years, as they faithfully maintain the subjugation to the Pope of Egypt according to a clause at the Nicean Council in the fourth century.
