Its a jewish/muslim thing. The sons of Abraham were to be circumcized as a sign of the covenant between Abraham and God. Many Christians believe that through Christ there is a new covenant and that it is unneccesary.
Doctors prefer to remove them because it helps them milk money out of the health insurance companies, and also because bad hygeine can result in infections in the area. That isn't really a problem if the mother teaches their children how to bathe and shower correctly.
