As with any creative endeavor, it probably helps to immerse yourself in the stuff you admire by other people. This is the lesson they teach in the great writing schools--to write, you have to read. Visual artists learn from the history of art. I would think they same applies to composing music. You have to know what's gone before, and what's going on now, and use that as a springboard for your own inspiration.
