Newham General always makes local headlines.
Hospital to look into rising tally of dead patients
11 June 2008
AN investigation will take place into increasing deaths at Newham General Hospital.
There were 62 deaths in April. These included one patient who had gone in for planned, non-urgent treatment.
There were 16 deaths each in the general and geriatric medicine departments, 15 in rehabilitation, seven in respiratory medicine and eight 'others'.
All deaths are reviewed by the hospital Trust's clinical teams.
The mortality rate is showing "a slight increase" in recent months and is worse than expected, health chiefs were told.
A fully comprehensive audit of recent deaths is to be carried out to help chiefs understand what is going on and why that many people are dying.
