i know the formulas, but in reality, it's not such a radically different kind of shit than doom or stoner. it's something for the really anal, you know? "see how they stop and let the guitar feedback? that's doom but hear how they pick up the speed at minute 1:37? that's sludge".
seriously, speaking of something that they use as a point of reference, the crusty vocals (influenced by amebix and nausea, etc.) don't sound too dissimilar to some black metal folk which is in itself a point of reference of many doom bands.
i really don't see the point in differenciating grief from monarch, for example, besides song lenghts.

and pantera, i love them but can see why people don't like them; they were a very important band for me growing up. i'd be hijacking the thread if a started talking about them...also, the great southern trendkill debuted at like number 3 on the billboard charts and sold millions, this is an album featuring SETH PUTNAM from ANAL CUNT in it.
