Superb topic this one and, as you know, one very close to my heart.

Of course, choice of bread is significant. Anything 'brown' suggests 'indie', 'folk', 'ambient', etc. White bread suggests classic metal and anything favoured by the 'masses' (Slade, Oasis, etc). Ciabattas are strictly for the avant-garde or any bands that foster a certain sophisticated aura.

Iron Maiden: White crusty bloomer filled with medium cheddar and branston pickle, and employing a thin layer of marg. home made is ideal but otherwise Greggs, Percy Ingles or a 24 hour garage. Absolutely reliable, unfussy, with a definite sense of tradition and wide-spread appeal. A sandwich you can trust.

Sonic Youth: Difficult this one. I'm going for an organic granery ciabatta base with olives drizzled in extra virgin olive oil. Inside will be a thin layer of mozarella and some rocket, topped with a layer of sun-dried tomatos. So far so homosexual. But just to keep you coming back for another bite there's gonna be a thin layer of homemade english mustard. Bought at a local Starbucks, inevitably.
