I spent the best part of today listening to the four Stooges albums and started thinking how some bands just seem to totally defy the concept of the 'producer'.
All their studio albums except Funhouse (IMO their best album) were produced by big names: John Cale; David Bowie; and Steve Albini, and all three of them completely fucked up. Cale didn't seem to get them at all, confused into believing he was dealing with some kind of Doors/Shangri-Las hybrid (which actually sounds like a pretty cool concept - but it's not the stooges); Bowie couldn't have fucked up Raw Power any more if he'd decided to let the drummer from Def Leppard do the hand-claps and Albini just seems to think every band requires the same production method regardless of whether they have a bass-player or not.
Ex-Kingsmen Don Gallucci seems to have done the best job on Funhouse, but even he seems a bit scared of guitars at times. Which sort of makes sense - considering he's a keyboardist by trade.
OK, I'm being a little harsh on Gallucci, but I dunno, I'm seriously beginning to believe that no one aside from me (and I can't even play the guitar) should've ever been allowed to produce The Stooges.
Actually, when I think about it, I probably should've produced most albums. I promise you they'd be at least ten percent better than they are.
