I really don't think he's ever been a great songwriter. He's just crazy. I do like his music, because he's a very interesting person, but I'd need a pretty convincing arguement to call him anything more than "decent".
Although, "Story Of An Artist", I have to say, is very nearly great. So is "Some Things Take a Long Time", but I wonder how much input he had in the production of it.
