I mean, the air of unreality in certain scenes: the smiling townsfolk waving at the beginning, the wholesomeness of the town and people (before Frank appears), the (deliberately?) fake-looking birds at the end.
Frank is just a maniac though his dialogue is blackly funny.
I think that's what makes the film: the way it switches between this idealism and the disturbing 'underworld' of Frank and his gang.
