That's really the best way to do it. The only way, actually.
I treat chords kind of like collectables, though. They only
really come in handy when I want to write a song with two chords that are really far apart. I can usually figure out a way to play them within the same couple frets. Or when I want a certain level of dissonance for something specific. Other than that, feel will just work the song out itself.
