Ah, good question! There's no secret to it really - just a lot of buffoonery, much liking the peoples here, an ability to have the piss taken out of me and enjoy the fun, and of course...Elton. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is a firm favourite in this household (as are The Carpenters, as some boardies are grimly aware of already).
An interest in what other people are doing is a must, too, whatever it may be. That, and having parents who listenend to T Rex and the Stones when I were a baby.
