Employers & society in general figures that if your parents have enough money to send you to a university then you'll make due somehow without their help. They term you "overqualified". The labor market respects specialized skills, not general knowledge.
So, college has become much like Preparatory School used to be; it's a place where the wealthy can dump their offspring for a few years.
