no, NOT cracking it up!!!
just put some cleaning alcohol on a cotton clothe and rub slightly along the contacts. if the comp formats the card and the sampler still doesnt recognize it. its has to be somethign to do with the sampler itself. and for 99% ist just a contact problem (like with old gameboys) or slightly corrosion on the contacts. you could also use a q-tip if you cant reach the contacts by hand.
does the rest of the sampler work fine? if not, maybe a short cut has blewn it off. that would suck and blew your gig too. but doesnt mean its irrepairable (does this word exist?)
