Matador's Cosly Apologies for Acting Like Tony Victory
Sep 24, 2008
Want to know one of Matador Records' secrets to running an independent label? Don't be that guy from Victory Records.
In the wake of some sort of message-board melodrama that's, frankly, even less interesting than it is mature, Matador's Gerard Cosloy issued a long and, remarkably, less interesting than the original melodrama, apology for said melodrama. We'll skip the long-winded stories other than to say Cosloy took issue with the way users of a Sonic Youth message board were painting Matador Records' treatment of its bands. In the process of his apology, Cosly revealed the label sets its moral compass partially by avoid Victory-like tantrums and tactics -- something he forgot this time around.
"People sometimes ask me, 'what's the most important lesson you, Chris and Patrick have learned from Tony Victory" and after I look him up on Google to make sure I don't get him mixed up with Tony Curtis, I reply that we're all about respecting the audience's intelligence.
"ie. whatever we observe Tony doing, we try to do the opposite."

Wow, I didn't think what he said was all that big of a deal.
