Really, you're surprised? I didn't know anyone liked it! In fact, I distinctly remember that when it came out everyone who ever liked the LIARS before hated it. While I wasn't a huge fan of LIARS' dance punk sound, I still thought this album was a disappointment from every angle.
I think there's maybe one good song on it. Liars aren't the best songwriters in the world to begin with, but that album in particular features really lousy songwriting. I guess that's what happens when the most talented members of your band leave right before you're about to record, eh? The songs literally sound like nothing, only held together by interesting production and a good atmosphere; organic, as you noted... in that way I can definitely see an Animal Collective link, though Animal Collective have actual strong MELODIES to back up even their weaker moments... It's pretty sad when the murkiness of the production is better than the actual songs on an album.
I did enjoy that song that goes "I'll take care of you", as it seems like it's the only one that had any thought put into it. THe rest are built around one annoying noise, nonsense chants, or just straight-up bad songwriting. It's an impossibly boring self-indulgent album that seems to be in love with itself.
The only other song I mildly enjoy, I believe it's the second track.. it's just drums and one atmospheric sound. But even that was bettered by their next album. That album sucks. I've listened to it probably 10 times in my life and it still sucks. And I say this as someone who appreciates LIARS (though they get way too much credit for "doing something different on every album")... I just think most of their output is pretty shoddy...
