Uh, that's just patently ridiculous. Superunknown debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Charts and received Grammy's for two singles. Badmotorfinger was certified platinum twice. Overall they've sold more than 20 million albums worldwide.

Growing up in Seattle, when you say, "the other grunge bands" I immediately think of Mudhoney, Tad, Skin Yard, Swallow, and a large handful of other bands you wouldn't have been likely to hear of. Yeah, Nirvana were part of that scene, and got rather popular. And because much of Pearl Jam originally was in Green River with Mark Arm, they get lumped in with "grunge" even though their music was always overproduced mega-polished alternative rock. And if you were also thinking of lumping Alice in Chains in there, before they went alternative, they were a glam metal band.

So of the "grunge" bands, Soundgarden are clearly one of the most commercially successful - even though by far their best material were their singles and eps for Sub Pop before they ever even caught on nationally.
