people will always melt-down and leave. most come back. either with a new user-name or simply just to lurk. message boards ebb and flow like that; but without a continuous supply of new blood, they tend to get clannish and the threads become inbred.
currently, we are witnessing a waning e-interest in Sonic Youth. the effect is a higher ratio of porn_spamers and stalker_fanboys (who are both like the message board equivalent to the cosmic constant), as opposed to somebody who might eventually have interesting things to say.
the new album should bring an influx of posters, but in the meantime, feel free to tell a friend (I would suggest downplaying the extreme_cuntestry though).
