I don't know about the US, but in the UK dance music is still pretty massive - albeit in the underground. House music isn't that big right now, but homegrown Hip Hop, Grime and Drum n Bass are still going very strong. It's just that the music papers have decided not to chat about them much lately, finding it far easier to focus on more conventional 'bands'. Dance music has always been really hard to market to a traditional Rock audience: which tends to demand good interviews, emphasises the importance of live performance and places a premium on 'musicianship' and 'personalities', none of which are particularly high-priority in 'dance' circles.
