I've never had a dog, and neither has my friend. Yesterday we got into a drunken argument about what you do when your dog dies.

He said that you have to tell the Police which seems bizarre to me; would you tell them if you're goldfish had died? Someone else overheard us and said that you just bury it in your garden, but then their friend got involved and said that you're not allowed to bury it - something to do with a new law after the foot-and-mouth-crisis. I wasn't sure about this, but I did wonder what someone who lived in a flat would do - they can't bury it anywhere, anyway. Surely you don't put a dead dog in the bin?

Can anyone on here solve this mystery for me/us? I'm from the UK but I'd be interested to see if there are cultural variations.
