i would buy active speakers then rather than passive, i would look at nothing smaller than 8inch drivers as the 5 inch drivers break up and distort to early. the yamaha hs80m's are the flatest response of all the speakers i have listened to in the $900-$1500au price range. i bought mine during mid year stock take sales and only paid $700au for the pair. the 80m's are based on the yamaha classic ns10 studio monitors. the are 120 watts which is more than enough for a home studio setup for near field monitors. apart from yamaha look at tannoy reveal series and genelec monitors. you are better spending more money and buying something good that will last for a few decades than buying something avergae that you will want to replace with in 3 years.
