Yeah, Has Been is such a damn fine album. Right up there with genre similar releases from Pat Boone (In a Metal Mood) and Black Velvet Flag (who've lounge version of "Institutionalized" smokes the original).
Jandek has a brilliant sense of humor, agreed. Especially the "Paint My Teeth" tunes, but lots of the seemingly dark, despondent stuff too. There's a wink there for those who care to get it.
I'm with Bytor Peltor on Chadbourne all the way too. And Camper Van Beethoven too, in moderation.
Nobody's mentioned the Minutemen yet??? True comedy is always tragedy, and they knew it like nobody's business.
Sun City Girls have a lot of brilliant comic moments, and in fact their whole career was sort of a Kabuki meets comedy routine on several levels.
Going way back, I rather like Spike Jones and His City Slickers.
And though I don't want to start the whole Zappa debate again, the Mothers of Invention were the perfect blend of comedy, rock, and experimental music at their best.
